Glossary
Plain-English definitions of the words you will see around Metal TV.
- Channel / the stream
- The single, continuous 24/7 broadcast everyone watches at the same time, like a TV channel rather than on-demand video.
- Rotation
- The pool of videos eligible to air, and the act of cycling through them. "In rotation" means a song can currently be scheduled.
- Genre family
- A normalised genre grouping (Black, Death, Doom, Thrash, Heavy, Power, and so on) that each band is tagged with. Used for search and for the Genres picker.
- Genres (picker)
- Your genre preferences. Set them from the player to lean the live channel toward what you and the other viewers want. See Genres.
- Now playing
- The band, song and album details for the clip currently on air, shown in the side panels (or overlaid in fullscreen).
- Upcoming / schedule
- The list of clips coming up next and the recent history, under the now-playing panel.
- Promotion (song)
- A paid boost that guarantees a song airs at least once every 24 hours for its run. See Promote a song.
- Advertisement
- A paid banner (under chat) or tile (under Active Genres) for a brand, release or event. See Advertise on Metal TV.
- Call to action (CTA)
- The optional button on a promoted song (icon, text and link), for example "Listen now", shown while the song plays.
- Library (yours)
- The bands you follow and tracks you save with a free account. See Following & saving.
- Metal Archives
- The community metal encyclopedia (metal-archives.com) that most band data is sourced from.
- Rescrape
- Refreshing a Metal Archives band's data. Use the Refresh button on a band profile if its info or artwork looks out of date.
- Manual band
- A band added by a member that is not on Metal Archives, filled in and maintained by its owner.
- Underground
- Lesser-known, independent or extreme metal. Metal TV deliberately leans this way.
- Filler
- A short holding clip the channel shows in the rare moment a scheduled video is not ready, so it never goes dark.
